Closer to the key to the mystery of archeology: students of the NCSPU Faculty of History are mastering a technique of radiocarbon paleochronology

The team of the scientific and project group “Reconstructive archeology: from practice to analysis” consisting of the students and professors of the NCSPU Faculty of History and Geography is trained in the program “Radiocarbon (14C) in the environment and the method of radiocarbon paleochronology”.

The training is held at the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia. This is a unique program worked out by Marina Kulkova, Ph D in Geological and Mineralogical Sciences. The program contains the lectures and laboratory classes; the students learn to work with the methods of geochronology. While the professors are trained in radiochemistry, analytical chemistry, ecology, and also in geochronology.

It should be noted that one hundred years ago, when the archeologists had to date the findings, they relied only on their intuition. With the emergence of the radiocarbon method they can set things right. Nowadays, the dating method of organic materials by containing radioactive isotope is widely used in archeology and other Earth sciences.

The classes were conducted by M. Kulkova, a Project Manager, M. Markova, Head of the research laboratory, and M. Streltsov, the laboratory assistant. During the training, the students visited the Research Department of the State Hermitage Museum.

As part of the program, the students visited the famous Peter and Pavel fortress, Zoological Museum, Kazan Cathedral, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, and other sights of the Northern capital.
